Vice President JD Vance is hoping for peace between Russia and Ukraine — and he also wants to stop funding Ukraine in the war.
The vice president said Sunday, “We’re done with the funding of the Ukraine war business. We want to bring about a peaceful settlement to this thing,” The Hill reported.
Vance was talking with Fox News’s Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures” in advance of President Donald Trump’s meeting Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. The two will be talking about a possible ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
Last week, Russia broached a possible deal if it received control of Eastern Ukraine.
However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is against it.
He posted a video on X explaining his thoughts on the deal.
“Ukraine is ready for real decisions that can bring peace. Any decisions that are against us, any decisions that are without Ukraine, are at the same time decisions against peace,” he said.
Although Zelensky is not included in Friday’s meeting, the White House and U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said Trump is open to including Ukraine in the summit.
European leaders are on board with peace between the two countries, but maintain any deal needs to “protect Ukraine’s and Europe’s vital security interests.”
Vance said enough is enough with America partially funding the conflict.
“Americans, I think, are sick of continuing to send their money, their tax dollars of this particular conflict but if the Europeans want to step up and actually buy the weapons from American producers we’re OK with that, but we’re not going to fund it ourselves anymore,” Vance said.
.
The vice president was in England Saturday to promote Trump’s efforts in brokering a deal.
“What we said to Europeans is simply, first of all, this is in your neck of the woods, this is in your backdoor, you guys have got to step up and take a bigger role in this thing, and if you care so much about this conflict you should be willing to play a more direct and a more substantial way in funding this war yourself,” Vance said.
