Jim Carrey found himself at the center of an internet firestorm after a rare red carpet appearance sparked wild speculation about his identity.
The 64-year-old actor attended the 2025 César Awards in Paris, where he accepted an honorary prize recognizing his career, per Page Six.
But instead of focusing on the milestone, online chatter quickly shifted to his appearance.
Some social media users questioned whether the man on stage was really Carrey at all.
“Jim Carrey attended the César Awards, where he accepted his Honorary César Award,” his representative, Marleah Leslie, told Page Six on Monday, shutting down rumors that a stand-in had taken his place.
César Awards general delegate Gregory Caulier also dismissed the speculation, calling Carrey’s presence “a historic moment.”
“Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer. From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation,” Caulier told Variety.
“Eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions. He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words,” he added.
According to Caulier, Carrey arrived with family and close friends, including his partner, daughter, grandson, longtime publicist, and filmmaker Michel Gondry.
“For me, it’s a non-issue. I just remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance,” Caulier said.
Despite those assurances, social media lit up with theories after fans claimed the actor looked “unrecognizable.” Some pointed to differences in his appearance and eye color.
“You can’t convince me they didn’t clone Jim Carrey…,” one user wrote on X.
“I’ve been talking about human cloning for a long time and I’m glad to see it finally gain some traction. Jim Carrey was cloned years ago. Something has changed behind the scenes to allow us to see unfinished and malfunctioning clones,” another added.
“I don’t understand why people don’t think this is Jim Carrey! He just had some bad plastic surgery…,” a third person claimed.
Adding to the buzz, makeup artist Alexis Stone posted images on Instagram that appeared to reference the rumors, including a mask resembling Carrey’s face.
The conspiracy chatter also revived an old clip of Carrey reflecting on identity.
“I don’t exist. So, they’re all characters that I played, including Jim Carrey,” he once said. “Jim Carrey was a less intentional character because I thought I was just building something that people would like. But it was a character.”
Carrey had stepped away from acting in the late 2010s, telling The Hollywood Reporter in 2018 that he “didn’t want to be in the business anymore.”
He later returned to the big screen for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, released in 2024.
