Former U.S. national security advisor John Bolton is warning Republicans about the danger of re-electing President Donald Trump for a second presidential term.
Ahead of Bolton’s new book release, he sat down for an interview with ABC News, broadcasted on Sunday.
As he expressed deep concern about the upcoming presidential election, Bolton also warned Republicans about the dangers of re-electing Trump for a second term.
“I think the concern I have, speaking as a conservative Republican, is that once the election is over if the president wins, the political constraint is gone,” Bolton said. “And because he has no philosophical grounding, there’s no telling what will happen in a second term.”
Bolton also shared his hopes for the American people to only remember Trump as a “one-term” president as he admitted his fears for the country if he is re-elected again.
“I hope [history] will remember him as a one-term president who didn’t plunge the country irretrievably into a downward spiral we can’t recall from,” Bolton said.
“We can get over one term. I have absolute confidence — even if it’s not the miracle of a conservative Republican being elected in November. Two terms, I’m more troubled about.”
Ahead of his warning about the election, Biden claimed that Trump lacks the understanding of how imperative and important it is to prioritize and increase the U.S. defense budget.
“There were successes, as, for example, when the Defense Department budget was significantly increased over wholly inadequate defense spending levels in the Obama administration,” Bolton said, adding, “But not in anything in the president’s mind connected to what those resources were for, their deterrent capabilities, where we still needed improvements.”
He continued, “He wanted to use those increases, which were important, simply to say, ‘I’ve boosted the defense budget. I don’t have to say anything else.’ That’s the political win for him.”
Bolton’s book titled, “The Room Where it All Happened,” is set to be released on Tuesday.
