John Force, the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) legend, remained in ICU Monday after crash Sunday afternoon at the Virginia Nationals.

John Force Racing providec the update after “catastrophic engine failure” resulted in a Funny Car explosion and a crash into two separate guard walls, Fox News reported.

“Attending doctors purposely were moving slowly in assessing the extent of the injuries to the Hall of Fame owner and driver because of the intensity of the impact,” the statement read. “Medical staff will not provide a treatment and recovery timetable until a total evaluation is completed.”

Force was joined by his wife and four daughters at the hospital.

“Updates on the 157-time tour winner’s condition will be released at the discretion of the medical staff,” per the statement.

Force’s team said Sunday that he was “conscious and alert” immediately following the wreck as safety personnel rushed to his aid.

Force, 75, was riding on the track in his Funny Car when his engine exploded. This caused him to veer across the centerline and into the wall.

His vehicle crossed back and hit the guard wall again.

The racing team said the  vehicle had “catastrophic engine failure” after he crossed the finish line at 302 mph.
