The White House announced on Thursday that it will begin construction of a new state ballroom that will hold a seating capacity of 650 people.

The upcoming 90,000 square foot ballroom will be “innately designed” and be a “significant increase” from the East Room, which holds a 200-person seating capacity, the White House announced in a statement. The construction of the new space will begin in September 2025 and is expected to be finished long before President Donald Trump’s second term ends.

“We are proud to announce that the construction of the new White House Ballroom will begin,” Leavitt said. “For 150 years, Presidents, Administrations, and White House Staff have longed for a large event space on the White House complex that can hold substantially more guests than currently allowed. President Trump has expressed his commitment to solving this problem on behalf of future administrations and the American people.”

“The White House is one of the most beautiful and historic buildings in the world, yet the White House is currently unable to host major functions honoring world leaders and other countries without having to install a large and unsightly tent approximately 100 yards away from the main building entrance,” Leavitt continued. “The White House State Ballroom will be a much-needed and exquisite addition of approximately 90,000 total square feet of innately designed and carefully crafted space, with a seated capacity of 650 people — a significant increase from the 200-person seated capacity in the East Room of the White House.”

Photographic designs of the ballroom show an ornate room with gold chandeliers and arched windows. The ballroom will be separated from the main building of the White House and will be located where the East Wing currently sits.

The construction will be overseen by McCrery Architects, which is known for their “classical architectural design,” according to the White House.

“Presidents in the modern era have faced challenges hosting major events at the White House because it has been untouched since President Harry Truman,” McCrery Architects CEO Jim McCrery said. “I am honored that President Trump has entrusted me to help bring this beautiful and necessary renovation to The People’s House, while preserving the elegance of its classical design and historical importance.”

Several donors, including Trump himself, have donated the necessary $200 million needed to build the new room.

A new wing has not been added to the White House since the construction of the East Wing in 1942. Major renovations took place in the White House from 1948 to 1952, when former President Harry S. Truman was in office.
