As the royal family heads into the holiday season, those close to King Charles say this Christmas carries a deeper weight — one shaped by his ongoing battle with cancer and a desire to make every moment count.
According to Page Six, sources who spoke with Us Weekly said the 77-year-old monarch has placed special significance on this year’s celebration, knowing his health challenges have introduced new uncertainties into the future.
“Charles prioritizes duty, but he’s also a family man who knows his time is precious,” one insider said. “He wants a special last Christmas in case it’s his last.”
Despite concerns about his condition, the king intends to maintain longstanding traditions. He plans to take part in the family’s Christmas morning walk to St. Mary Magdalene Church and will personally record his annual Christmas address — something he reportedly refuses to give up under any circumstances.
“Nothing would stop Charles from doing that,” the source added, noting that he continues to embrace Queen Elizabeth II’s belief that a monarch “has to be seen to be believed.”
Those who work closely with the king, however, remain uneasy. Another source said there is quiet worry that “his health isn’t the best,” even after Charles told the public in September that he was “not [doing] too bad.” For now, the palace is approaching the situation cautiously.
“They’re taking it day by day,” the insider shared.
But the season isn’t defined solely by concern. There is also genuine joy within the family, thanks to Princess Kate’s recent milestone.
The first insider described this Christmas as “a time of celebration” following her successful cancer treatment and remission announcement earlier this year.
Kate and Prince William — who recently moved into their new “forever home” at Forest Lodge in Windsor Great Park — are expected to spend the holiday creating memories with their children and the extended family.
“They all want to make the most of their time together,” the source said.
In a notable shift from some past years, Kate’s parents, Michael and Carole Middleton, will join the family at Sandringham as they show support for the king during a challenging period.
Princess Kate publicly revealed her cancer diagnosis in March 2024 after speculation grew over her absence from royal engagements. She completed chemotherapy last September and announced her remission in January 2025. Since then, she has gradually returned to her royal duties.
For Charles, this Christmas is shaped by both tradition and tenderness — a blend of royal responsibility and a clear desire to embrace the people closest to him.
