Former Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said Thursday on Fox News that he saw First Lady Jill Biden act “just as much president” as her husband throughout his term.

Following President Joe Biden’s poor debate performance against President-elect Donald Trump in June, questions arose as to why the president chose to seek reelection, with some reports saying his wife played a role encouraging him to run. Jill Biden recently told The Washington Post that she was “disappointed” in former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for not supporting Biden’s reelection bid, as Democrats called for him to drop out. On “The Ingraham Angle,” host Laura Ingraham asked McCarthy about that.

“I’ll tell you something about Jill. It’s something I’ve never seen at any other time in the presidency. She was as much the president as Joe Biden was,” McCarthy said. “She would be in meetings you wouldn’t think about. I remember one time I’m sitting back in the dining room and Joe says something about taking us outside. She turns around, ‘No, they don’t wanna go outside.’ She was the protector.”

“But this is the problem. She knew his weakness. She knew he wasn’t up for the job, and she kept pushing him because she liked being in the job. How many times did she go overseas to represent him? How many times did she take the travel to represent him when he wasn’t mentally capable of doing it? That’s OK, because Jill would go,” McCarthy added.

Ingraham then asked why Jill Biden would be mad at Pelosi. McCarthy quickly said “Because Nancy Pelosi took that opportunity.”

“She [Pelosi] pulled the curtain back. But it was only after the whole of America saw it. They all lied the whole time. They would attack me when I would walk out and tell the truth,” McCarthy said.

With Biden’s poll numbers dropping following his debate performance, Pelosi had reportedly worked behind closed doors to push Biden out of his 2024 presidential bid, declining to answer whether she still supported his run during an MSNBC interview on July 10. Democrats, pundits, and donors quickly began to oppose Biden’s candidacy, with nearly 40 party lawmakers urging the president to drop out.

By July 21, Biden announced the end of his campaign, saying he believed it would be in the best interests of the party and country for him “to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term.” During an Aug. 6 interview, Pelosi denied her reported role in the president’s withdrawal, saying she hadn’t spoken to Biden since his announcement.
