The results of GOP Rep. John Duarte and Democrat Adam Gray’s race for California’s 13th Congressional District could decide how slim the Republican House majority is.

The winner of the only remaining uncalled House race could determine the difference between a one- to two-seat majority. If Gray flips the key California district’s seat, the House would have 215 Democrats and 220 Republicans heading into 2025.

As of Monday afternoon, Gray was leading at 50.01% with 105,083 votes to Duarte’s 49.9% at 104,856 votes, the Associated Press said. The GOP has held on to control of the U.S. House, having secured the 218 seats needed for a majority with just the one race still yet to be called, according to the AP. Republicans also have control of the Senate heading into 2025, securing the GOP trifecta.

President-elect Donald Trump was victorious in the 2024 presidential election against Vice President Kamala Harris, sweeping all seven key battleground states including Georgia and Pennsylvania. Trump received 312 electoral votes to Harris’ 226, according to the AP. Three of the House seats are to be left vacant as special elections are conducted to replace Trump cabinet nominees and former Republican Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz.

Duarte has served as the U.S. representative for California’s 13th congressional district since 2023. Meanwhile, Gray was elected to the California State Assembly in 2012, where he represented Merced County and Stanislaus County.

The process of vote-counting can take weeks in California, with many voters using mail-in ballots and the polls facing various staffing shortages. Machines in Nevada County, Calif. encountered a printing error in October, resulting in officials being concerned over just how many of the ballots were potentially compromised.
