Latino Republicans are more likely to vote in the 2024 presidential election than Latino Democrats, according to an Axios Vibes survey conducted by The Harris Poll released Tuesday.

The vast majority of Latino Republicans, 86%, said they are likely to vote in November, while only 71% of Latino Democrats and 54% of Latino independents said they are likely to vote, according to the poll. Although Latinos voters have historically tended to support Democratic presidential nominees, Republicans have been gaining ground among the demographic, often citing immigration. Latino Republicans said their top issues are inflation, border security and crime, according to the poll. Latino Democrats also identified inflation as the top issue, followed by climate change and abortion.

Since President Joe Biden assumed office, there have been over 10 million migrant encounters nationwide, eight million of which were along the southern border, according to data from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). In 2024 alone, there were 2.4 million migrant encounters nationwide.

The majority of Latino voters, 62%, said they would favor “more strict” immigration policies, while just 23% said they would favor “more lenient” ones, according to the poll. At the same time, 74% of non-Latino voters overall favor “more strict” policies.

Former President Donald Trump has vowed to enact the “largest domestic deportation” if elected, and his strict immigration policies have become increasingly mainstream. In contrast, Biden issued nearly 300 executive actions on immigration within his first year in office, 89 of which reversed or attempted to reverse Trump’s immigration policies, according to an analysis from the Migration Policy Institute.

Latino Democrats have outnumbered Latino Republicans, with 61% of Hispanic voters identifying as or leaning Democratic, while 35% identify as or lean Republican, according to April findings from the Pew Research Center. Despite this, Latino Republicans are more likely to be enthusiastic about the presidential election than Latino Democrats, according to the poll.

Over half of Latino Republicans, 56%, said they are enthusiastic about the November election, while only 40% of Latino Democrats agreed, according to the poll. Still, Latino voters are overall less enthusiastic about voting than all American voters, with 68% of Latinos saying they are likely to vote in November while 79% of all Americans said they are likely to vote, according to the poll.

The Axios Vibes survey conducted by The Harris Poll sampled 2,034 U.S. adults, 587 of which identified as Latino and 502 of which identified as Latino voters, from July 10-12. The poll has a margin of error of 2.3 percentage points overall, and a margin of error of 5.5 percentage points across Latino voters.
