Republican Utah Sen. Mike Lee said Thursday on Fox Business that President Donald Trump’s immediate action on the U.S. southern border has shown how “inexcusable” former President Joe Biden’s “inactions” were.

Immediately following Trump’s inauguration on Monday, the president took action on the U.S. southern border, as he had campaigned to shut it down and conduct mass deportations due to record-high encounters of illegal immigrants under the Biden-Harris administration. On “Kudlow,” host Larry Kudlow asked Lee about his thoughts on the deportations. This, after Fox News’ Bill Melugin recorded a Haitian migrant being arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Boston, Mass.

“Look, what I make of this is that Donald Trump has shown that he’s willing to deliver on campaign promises. Promises the American people have been relying on him to deliver and promises that really are long overdue,” Lee said. “This also shows, Larry, just how inexcusable the Biden administration’s inaction was. They claimed over and over again, ‘Oh, we can’t do it for this reason, that reason, or any other reason.’”

WATCH:

“This was a willful subversion of America’s border security, an intentional weakening of our national security. He left this thing wide open for four years. He did so, moreover, after receiving the most secure border any incoming president has had in modern history, and he ruined it,” Lee added.

Due to continued criticism of the border, Biden later introduced a new immigration executive order in June 2024, despite his previous insistence that there was nothing he could do. However, in a joint report released by the House Committees on Oversight and Accountability and Homeland Security, more than 8 million migrants were encountered nationwide, with an estimated 6.7 million encountered at the southern border.

Lee went on to say that with Trump back in office, the new administration has been forced to “go back” to the “drawing board” to find a solution to the issue.

“Now, Donald Trump is having to go back almost to the drawing board, as it were, start from square one, and he’s already making significant progress. I applaud him for that, looking forward to what comes after this. No nation can survive as long as it doesn’t have defensible borders, and America is no exception,” Lee said.

With Trump’s reversal of Biden’s previous programs, ICE agents have been authorized to arrest “criminal aliens,” including rapists and murderers. The new administration will also utilize Department of Defense military aircraft for airlifting an estimated 5,000 illegal migrants from Texas and California for deportation.
