Former Rep. Liz Cheney, a Republican who has heavily criticized Republican nominee Donald Trump, will for Vice President Kamala Harris come November.
Cheney, who represented Wyoming in the House of Representatives, announced her intention to vote for Harris while talking at Duke University Wednesday.
CNN obtained an audio recording of Cheney’s talk.
Cheney emphasized the importance of stopping Trump in his quest to return to the White House.
“I think it is crucially important for people to recognize, not only is what I just said about the danger that Trump poses something that should prevent people from voting for him, but I don’t believe that we have the luxury of writing in candidates’ names, particularly in swing states,” Cheney said.
The location of Cheney’s announcement is key given North Carolina is a battleground state, a source revealed.
“And as a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this, and because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I will be voting for Kamala Harris,” she said.
The news of a Cheney endorsement was music to the Harris campaign’s ears as she joins other Republicans in backing the Democrat, including former Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger and former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan.
“The Vice President is proud to have earned Congresswoman Cheney’s vote. She is a patriot who loves this country and puts our democracy and our Constitution first,” campaign chairwoman Jen O’Malley Dillon said.
Cheney has been an outspoken critic of Trump — a stance that cost her a seat in the House in 2022.
The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney voted to impeach Trump after his alleged role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
