New York City’s progressive establishment is in full meltdown mode after a City Council employee — an illegal immigrant with an arrest for assault — was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement during what’s being described as a “routine” immigration court appearance.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) wasted no time in lighting up social media, calling the arrest an “assault on our democracy.” But here’s what he left out: ICE says the man has no legal right to be in the United States and a criminal record. Minor details, apparently.

The individual in question, reportedly a data analyst for the NYC Council, entered the U.S. on a tourist visa in 2017 and was supposed to leave the same year. He didn’t. Instead, he stuck around, picked up an assault arrest, and somehow landed a job handling data for the government of America’s biggest city.

I am outraged to hear a New York City Council employee was detained in Nassau County by federal immigration officials at a routine immigration appointment. This is an assault on our democracy, on our city, and our values. I am calling for his immediate release and will continue…

Let that sink in.

According to DHS, the man was detained lawfully and transferred to a Manhattan facility. “He had no legal right to be in the United States,” DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said. “If you come to our country illegally and break our law, we will find you, and we will arrest you.”

But for Mamdani and company, this isn’t about law enforcement doing its job. It’s about feelings. “This is an assault on our city and our values,” Mamdani cried.

Should the City Council employee detained by ICE be released?

The real assault? Allowing criminal illegals to bypass the system and get placed into taxpayer-funded jobs while ICE gets demonized for doing what Congress already authorized it to do: enforce the law.

City Council Speaker Julie Menin (D) chimed in, insisting the man was “doing everything right.” Right — except overstaying his visa, getting arrested, and working illegally for the city government. That’s apparently the new bar for “doing everything right” in New York politics.

Even New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) got involved, saying ICE is “weaponizing” enforcement. That’s rich coming from a governor whose own state is reeling from a self-inflicted migrant crisis.

What we’re seeing here is a perfect example of the elite double standard: laws for the little people, outrage for the cameras, and zero accountability when their soft-on-illegal-immigration policies come back to bite them.

If the Left wants to talk about assaults on democracy, maybe they should start with the part where someone illegally residing in the U.S., with a criminal history, is given access to sensitive government operations — while the people tasked with enforcing the law are painted as villains.

ICE isn’t the problem here. The real problem is a ruling class that treats law enforcement as the enemy and lawbreakers as heroes.
