Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is choosing to commemorate Presidents Day by calling for states to secede from the country.

In a tweet on Monday, the Georgia congresswoman wrote, “We need a national divorce. We need to separate by red states and blue states and shrink the federal government.”

“Everyone I talk to says this,” she continued. “From the sick and disgusting woke culture issues shoved down our throats to the Democrat’s traitorous America Last policies, we are done.”

We need a national divorce.

We need to separate by red states and blue states and shrink the federal government.

Everyone I talk to says this.

From the sick and disgusting woke culture issues shoved down our throats to the Democrat’s traitorous America Last policies, we are…

One user responded, “Just causally calling for the end of the Union on a Monday morning.”

Reporter Matthew Chapman wrote, “That’s called secession, and Southern states already tried that and it caused a civil war that killed 600,000 people.”

Conservative commentator Benji Backer tweeted, “Disgusting behavior from a United States Congresswoman. It’s wrong, it’s fear-mongering, and it’s anti-American. Will the GOP denounce this?”

Sharing a tweet calling for the country’s dissolution, what a way to celebrate Presidents Day.

Congresspeople are supposed to swear an oath to support and defend the Constitution. Perhaps Greene has a different view as to what that portion of the oath means.

However, pushing for the country to break up due to political differences contradicts the oath.

Some figures in conservative media have been — to put it charitably — not against the idea of a “national divorce.” In other cases, they have outright endorsed it.

It is one thing to hear some commentator babble on about the alleged bliss of separating conservative and liberal states into different countries. And even though such ideas are dumb, they have a right to speak their mind.

But it is quite disturbing to see a member of the House calling for the country to break apart. The point of the House and Congress is to bring people from all over the country with all different viewpoints to hash out our differences over legislation and policy.

Congress certainly has its issues in terms of how it operates currently. But, breaking up the country because you are mad about drag shows, Ukraine, and Twitter is not the answer. And just casually tossing the idea out on Twitter is not responsible or the type of behavior we should expect from our representatives.
