The daughter of former Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton gave an update after she was admitted into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to a rare form of pneumonia.
On Oct. 14, Shayla Kelley Schrepfer, 23, took to her Instagram page to share “some uplifting updates” about her mother’s progress which she called “truly remarkable.”
“Prayers have been felt and have been answered,” she wrote. “Although she remains in the ICU, her path to recovery is steadily unfolding.”
She continued, “Her fighting spirit is truly shining! Her breathing is becoming stronger, and her reliance on machines is diminishing.”

Schrepfer further stated although Retton’s “journey” is “lengthy,” seeing her “improvements is incredibly heartening!”
“She’s responding so well to treatments,” she shared.
Schrepfer concluded her statement by expressing her “heartfelt gratitude” to everyone for their “overwhelming love and support.”
This came after she posted a video on her Instagram page on Oct. 11 revealing Retton, 55, was “still fighting” after the news broke of her hospitalization on Oct. 10.
“It’s going to be a day-by-day process, and we hope that you guys will respect her boundaries as we want to keep the details between her and our family right now,” Schrepfer shared. “She’s been treated with the best of the best professionals here, and it has been such a blessing to have their hands on her.”
She continued, “So please continue the prayers and we cannot thank you enough for the love and support that you guys have shown.”
On Oct. 12, Retton’s daughter McKenna Lane Kelley also posted an update on her Instagram page.
“My sisters Skyla, Shayla and Emma and I would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support for our Mom. Mom is in ICU and continues to fight,” she wrote.
Kelley revealed her mother was “getting incredible medical care.”
“Thank you to all the doctors and nurses! We ask for continued prayers and positive thoughts for our Mom,” she concluded.
