A chaotic street takeover in suburban Maryland spiraled into outright violence when masked individuals surrounded and vandalized a marked police cruiser — while an officer was still inside.
The incident unfolded just after midnight on Feb. 22 at the busy intersection of East West Highway and Connecticut Avenue in Chevy Chase. Video footage and witness accounts show a large group of drivers converging on the area, blocking traffic in all directions and performing high-speed “donuts” as smoke filled the air and onlookers crowded dangerously close to the spinning vehicles.
Montgomery County police said the situation began around 12:39 a.m. when officers observed a caravan of vehicles associated with takeover activity heading toward the Silver Spring central business district. Law enforcement moved to monitor the group and proactively shut down several intersections in an effort to restrict access and protect the public.
Despite those measures, dozens of vehicles flooded the intersection, effectively shutting it down.
Dash camera footage captured individuals appearing to deliberately stand in the roadway to block police vehicles. Drivers continued performing dangerous stunts as the scene escalated.
During the confrontation, two marked Montgomery County Police Department cruisers were damaged. Department-released photos show shattered windows and heavy damage to the patrol vehicles.
In one case, an officer was seated inside his cruiser when the rear window was smashed and the windshield shattered. Authorities confirmed that no officers were injured in the attack.

Should stricter measures be taken to prevent illegal street takeovers in Maryland?— DeVory Darkins (@devorydarkins) February 25, 2026
Maryland State Police responded to assist local officers in dispersing the crowd and restoring traffic flow.
The incident was not isolated to Montgomery County. Before the caravan reached the area, Prince George’s County Police and Maryland State Police conducted traffic stops connected to the gathering and recovered three handguns.
Law enforcement officials have repeatedly warned that street takeovers pose significant risks not only to participants and spectators but also to unsuspecting drivers caught in the chaos. The combination of high-speed stunts, blocked intersections, and large crowds creates a volatile and unpredictable environment.
The Montgomery County Department of Police 2nd District Investigative Section is leading the investigation. Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying those responsible for the vandalism and dangerous activity.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Crime Solvers of Montgomery County. Tips can be submitted anonymously, and information leading to an arrest may qualify for a reward ranging from $250 to $10,000.
As investigators work to identify suspects, the footage serves as a stark reminder of how quickly these illegal gatherings can escalate from reckless spectacle to direct attacks on law enforcement.
