House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) says Republicans’ investigation of President Joe Biden is getting closer to the level of an impeachment proceeding.
During an appearance on Fox News Monday night, McCarthy pointed to an unverified FBI document known as an FD-1023 that contained allegations Biden was involved in a foreign bribery scheme.
“When President Biden was running for office, he told the American public that he’s never talked about business, he said his family has never received a dollar from China… We now have some of the most credible whistleblowers — these tenured IRS agents — who have come said that the Biden family has been treated differently,” he continued.
Two IRS whistleblowers have claimed the Justice Department interfered with the investigation of the president’s son Hunter Biden.
The California Republican went on:
“We would know none of this if Republicans had not taken the majority. We’ve only followed where the information has taken us. And this is rising to the level of impeachment inquiry, which provides Congress the strongest power to get the rest of the knowledge and information needed.”

According to the allegation in the FD-1023, an informant who the FBI described as “highly credible,” provided information about meetings that took place as early as 2015.
The informant shared information about a 2016 meeting allegedly involving Mykola Zlochevsky, the CEO of Ukrainian energy company Burisma, who claimed he made two $5 million payments to “the Bidens.” However, he did not specify which family members.
“It costs 5 (million) to pay one Biden, and 5 (million) to another Biden,” Zlochevsky allegedly told the informant.
The FBI noted the informant could not “provide any further opinion as the veracity” of the allegations.
CNN points out that the meeting would have taken place as Hunter Biden was serving on the board of Burisma and making $50,000 a month. However, there has been no evidence that Joe Biden was involved in his work or received a payment.
The FBI has criticized the release of the document and claimed it “unnecessarily risks the safety of a confidential source.”
Meanwhile, White House spokesperson Ian Sams said in a statement to CNN the allegations have been “debunked for years.”
