First Lady Melania Trump is honoring the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage by creating an art exhibit crafted from work by students across all 50 states.
Students are being asked to submit works depicting “individuals, objects, and events representing the women’s suffrage movement,” and an explanation as to how it represents the movement.
In a statement, Trump said, “As we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the 19thAmendment, it’s important to include our children in the conversation so they can learn and understand the history behind the women’s suffrage movement.”
She continued:
“For decades, women leaders lobbied, marched, and protested for equality and their right to vote in the United States. It is my hope that this project will both support and expand the important conversations taking place on equality and the impact of peaceful protests, while encouraging children to engage in the history behind this consequential movement in their own home state.”
Students will have until July 6 to submit their artwork. The exhibit is designed to launch on the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the suffrage amendment — which gave women the right to vote.
Congress approved the suffrage amendment in 1919, and it took just over a year for the required two-thirds of the states to ratify the amendment. It was ratified after Tennessee voted on August 18, 1920, to approve the amendment.
