Melania’s $7 million opening weekend didn’t just make headlines — it sent a message. The documentary delivered the strongest opening for its genre in a decade and, in the process, embarrassed two Barack Obama-era films that were once propped up as cultural events by critics and legacy media.
Start with The Final Year, released theatrically in 2018. Marketed as a behind-the-scenes chronicle of the Obama administration’s foreign policy team during Obama’s final year in office, the film was treated like a prestige project. Critics lined up to praise it. Media outlets framed it as essential viewing. The strategy was familiar: limited release, strong reviews, and the hope that glowing coverage would spark momentum.

At its peak, The Final Year never played in more than 39 theaters. After two weeks, the total domestic gross stalled at a humiliating $262,286.
The opening weekend numbers are even worse. Despite almost certainly being placed in Democrat-heavy cities like Los Angeles and New York, the film opened in just eight theaters and averaged a shocking $121 per screen. Not a typo. Eight theaters. Nearly empty.
Now compare that to Melania. Across 1,778 theaters nationwide, Melania averaged $1,035 per theater. That’s not just better — it’s a different universe. One film couldn’t fill a handful of screens in friendly territory. The other packed theaters across the country.
And here’s the part Hollywood prefers not to talk about: critics adored The Final Year. It holds an 83 percent fresh rating from 105 reviews. That’s more than a score — it’s free advertising, repeated endlessly across cable news and cultural outlets. All that praise, all that coverage, and the audience still didn’t show up.
Remember Southside with You, the feature film about Barack and Michelle Obama’s first date? Released in 2016, it went wide domestically and opened internationally in six countries. Worldwide, it managed a laughable $6.6 million total.
In the U.S. alone, Southside with You played in as many as 897 theaters. It stayed in theaters for 70 days. It premiered at Sundance. It wasn’t a documentary. It wasn’t facing an immediate streaming release. It benefited from endless favorable press and a 92 percent fresh rating from 159 reviews.
The Leftists are pathetic, vial heathens. Good always prevails.

And still, it couldn’t top Melania’s opening weekend.
Despite every institutional advantage — critics, festivals, press, narrative storytelling — Obama-branded films failed to generate real audience interest. Meanwhile, Melania succeeded despite nonstop hostility from corporate media and an openly coordinated negative campaign.
In 2024, Donald Trump earned nearly eight million more raw votes than Barack Obama ever did. In 2026, Melania Trump did something similar at the box office.
