A deadly robbery in Minneapolis led some online to mock Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty over a December 2025 video in which she defended Somali migrants.

Abdrahman Khayre Khayre, a Somali migrant, was charged with second-degree murder and first-degree robbery for his role in a Feb. 24 shooting that occurred during an attempt to rob a man of a designer bag, Minneapolis-area TV stations KSTP and FOX9 reported. Online, one user on X resurfaced Moriarty’s December video in response to President Donald Trump’s plan to deploy federal agents to crack down following reports that Somali scammers stole billions of dollars of welfare funds.

“There are no roving gangs of Somali people in this community harassing, threatening, doing anything to any of our community members, and let me repeat that again because I’ve heard this often, there are no roving gangs of Somalis targeting or harassing or doing anything inappropriate to any community members,” Moriarty claimed in the post. “Those are simply lies. It is not true.”

One user on X, known as Dapper Detective, mocked Moriarty in a post that included a report from KMSP.

“Minneapolis Somali Pirate belonging to a roving gang terrorizing citizens—while out on bail for a pending carjacking case is now charged with cold blood murdering a man during a robbery over a Louis Vuitton bag,” Dapper Detective said.

Khayre had previously been arrested for a September carjacking, but had been placed out on bond, according to MNCrime.

Federal officials estimated in December that the amount of suspected fraud in Minnesota’s Medicaid program had reached over $9 billion, as multiple federal agencies are investigating and the Trump administration is pausing payments to the state pending audits of the welfare programs.

Independent journalists Nick Sortor and Cam Higby were targeted multiple times by mobs of Somalis, including one incident where Sortor had his camera stolen.
