‘Deadliest Year by Far’ at the Border: Migrant Death Toll Rising

A Border Patrol agent walks between a gap along the border wall between the US and Mexico in Yuma, Arizona on June 1, 2022. - In May, US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas authorized US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to use some existing DHS appropriations to close gaps in the Yuma Sector border bollard barrier fence as migrants seeking asylum cross the border and Title 42 restrictions on immigration continue, while DHS also said in a statement it calls on Congress to cancel remaining appropriations for barrier system construction and instead fund "smart border security" measures. Tammy Nobles is suing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for allegedly allowing a dangerous gang member into the country illegally. That alleged gang member then allegedly raped and murdered her 20-year-old daughter.

According to the News Nation, she is suing for $100 million in the hopes that it will draw more attention to the border crisis and the dangers it presents.

The family’s attorney stated, “We’re bringing this lawsuit because we’re tired of being held hostage in our own country. We’re tired of DHS playing Russian roulette with our lives.”

During harrowing testimony at Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas’s impeachment inquiry on Jan. 18, Nobles stated, “The illegal MS-13 known gang member brutally raped and murdered my daughter by strangling her with a cord and robbed her of $6.00.”

“During the attack Kayla called her boyfriend for help but went to voicemail. The voicemail of the murderer strangling Kayla was 2 minutes and 30 seconds long,“ Nobles said.

Tammy Nobles’ autistic daughter, Kayla Hamilton, was raped and strangled to death three days after her 20th birthday in 2022. A teen with alleged ties to the MS-13 gang has been charged in her death and is awaiting trial, according to Fox News.

Nobles called out the DHS for allegedly not properly identifying the suspect’s gang tattoos and allowing him to illegally enter the country with no consequences, according to reports.

In addition, she also noted they allegedly failed to properly process the suspect as a minor, being that he is underage and all minors are legally required to have a family member or sponsor living within the U.S. before entering.

Her mother spoke about her daughter’s fear and her death. Then she noted, “Kayla fought for her life that day with all that she had and in the end she lost to an individual that wasn’t even supposed to be allowed in the country..”

“For me this not a political issue this a safety issue for everyone living in the United States. This could have been anyone’s daughter. I don’t want any other parent to live the nightmare that I am living,” she continued.

“I am her voice now and I am going to fight with everything I have to get her story told and bring awareness of the issue at the border,” she added.

Nobles called for stricter border policies and enforcement to save others from a similar fate.

She concluded, “This isn’t about immigration. This is about protecting everyone in the United States.”
