The mother of 14-year-old Danika Troy says her daughter walked into the woods that December afternoon believing she was meeting a boy who cared about her.
According to Fox News, instead, investigators say Danika was led into a deadly ambush by two teens she knew from school — and trusted.
In an interview with the New York Post, Ashley Troy said one of the accused killers, 16-year-old Gabriel Williams, feigned romantic interest to gain Danika’s trust.
She believes that is what persuaded her daughter to follow him into the wooded trail in Pace, Florida, where she never returned.
“That’s how she was lured,” Ashley said.
Williams and 14-year-old Kimahri Blevins have been charged with first-degree premeditated murder in the killing. Ashley said she’s still searching for clarity in the middle of her grief. “I still need answers. I’m just left asking why,” she said. “She just wanted to be in love.”
Danika was reported missing on Dec. 1. The next day, a passerby discovered her body in a wooded area in Santa Rosa County. Investigators said she had been shot multiple times and then set on fire.
Detectives quickly identified Williams and Blevins as suspects. Both teens were taken into custody shortly afterward. Early on, investigators said they believed the killing may have been tied to a social-media dispute over Thanksgiving break. According to the sheriff’s office, the boys claimed they targeted Danika because she had blocked Blevins online and insulted Williams.
Ashley dismissed that version outright. “What those boys said is an excuse,” she told the outlet.
Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson confirmed that Danika’s body had been positively identified and said the case came together swiftly because both suspects were already known to law enforcement. Their prior “run-ins” weren’t detailed publicly because of their ages.
Johnson described the crime as almost beyond comprehension. After explaining that Williams allegedly stole his mother’s handgun to carry out the attack, he added, “It’s bad enough you kill a 14-year-old. You’re 14. You’re 16. Shoot her multiple times, and then they set her on fire.”
He said the motives offered by the suspects “don’t fit the forensics or any facts of the case,” leaving investigators with no clear explanation for the brutality. “So we don’t have a legit motive,” he said.
Both teens remain held without bond at the Department of Juvenile Justice. Prosecutors are working with investigators to determine whether they will be charged as adults.
Sheriff Johnson made his position clear: “If you do an adult crime, you gotta do adult time.”
Ashley, meanwhile, said she believes “evil influence” played a role in whatever led the boys to kill her daughter. But her focus now is justice. She wants “nothing less than for them to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
