MSNBC host Alex Wagner appeared to be surprised Tuesday night by former President Donald Trump’s surge among Hispanic men according to an exit poll.

Trump gained support among both Hispanic and black voters in polling released prior to Election Day, largely due to issues such as the economy and immigration. Wagner read exit poll data to a panel that included former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, Voto Latino CEO Maria Teresa Kumar and MSNBC host Symone Sanders-Townsend.

WATCH:

“We have some national, broad national polling about exit polling, about Harris’s strength among Latino men and they seem to be breaking for Donald Trump which is a very big difference from 2020 when they broke for Joe Biden by I believe 23 points, they may be breaking for Trump by as many as 10 points, again this is early, early, early, but can you talk to me about your thoughts on those numbers, for a state like Pennsylvania where there is a huge Latino population,” Wagner asked Kumar.

While Vice President Kamala Harris regained some support from Hispanic voters in pre-election polling since replacing President Joe Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket, she still lags behind Biden’s numbers from the 2020 election.

Some Democrats attacked Trump over a joke stand-up comedian Tony Hinchcliffe told about Puerto Rico, calling it an “island of garbage,” during Trump’s Oct. 27 rally at Madison Square Garden. In response to the joke, Biden labeled the former president’s supporters “garbage” during an Oct. 29 virtual campaign event.

Trump also gained significant support among black voters in Georgia, particularly men, Fox News host Sandra Smith reported, citing exit polls in the swing state.

Harris escalated her rhetoric against Trump in the closing weeks of the presidential campaign, devoting a major speech to attacking the former president as a threat to democracy and portraying him as “unstable” days after calling him a “fascist” during an Oct. 23 town hall on CNN.
