UPDATE [09/10/25, 4:59 p.m. EST]: President Donald Trump confirmed the news that Charlie Kirk has died.

MSNBC is facing backlash after comments made immediately following Charlie Kirk being shot at an event.

Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was shot at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, where he was holding an event as part of his American Comeback Tour.

Though acknowledging that there is no information as of yet, it was speculated on air on MSNBC it could have been “a supporter shooting their gun off in celebration.”

Per NBC News, “Kirk was sat in a tent with the ‘American Comeback Tour’ logo when a shot is heard and Kirk physically recoils, slumping down in his seat. Blood is seen flowing down from his neck and the crowd audibly panics and begins to run.”

“Charlie Kirk has been shot at Utah Valley University. Condition unknown,” Kirk’s spokesperson said, according to Fox News.

In another clip on MSNBC following the shooting, correspondent Kate Tur commented that Kirk is a “divisive figure, polarizing, lightning rod. What ever term you want to use.”

Nicholas Fondacaro, associate editor of NewsBusters, reacted on X, “MSNBC anchor and apparent psycho Kate Tur lashes out at Charlie Kirk after he was shot in the neck moments ago.”

MSNBC calls Charlie Kirk "divisive" after he was shot and suggests the gunman could have been a Trump supporter firing off their gun in "celebration."

Kurr also touched on gun laws “within 5 minutes of breaking the news,” NewsBusters senior research analyst Bill D’Agostino wrote on X.

UPDATE [09/10/25, 4:19 p.m. EST]: It was previously reported by ABC News the university said a suspect is in custody. However, according to a spokesperson from Utah Valley University, the suspect is not in custody, per CNN.

This is a developing situation and information will be updated as it becomes available.
