U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has said she will introduce a bill to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
The comment was posted by Greene on X after President-elect Donald Trump made his first remarks following the confirmation of the 2024 election results by Congress on Monday.
“President Trump’s second term is off to a GREAT start,” Greene posted on X, “I’ll be introducing legislation ASAP to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to its rightful name, the Gulf of America!”
During his remarks, which were made at his home at Mar-A-Lago, Florida, Trump said that the Gulf of Mexico should have its name changed to the Gulf of America.
“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico, to the Gulf of America — which has a beautiful ring. That covers a lot of territory. The Gulf of America, what a beautiful name, and it’s appropriate, it’s appropriate,” Trump said.

Fox News host Harris Faulkner also reacted to the comments, noting Trump’s remarks show he has the U.S. as his number one priority.
“It’s more than just a name; it’s a reminder of what he puts in his front-view mirror — it’s us. It’s this country,” Faulkner said, “And since we surround that body of water, I could understand why he might wanna change the name. But it also let’s all of those countries who think that we’re joking about that fact though, for sure, that we’re not. I mean Mexico is gonna be sitting right next door to the Gulf of America, potentially.”
