Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi could not back up her claim on Wednesday that the Republicans’ continuing resolution (CR) to fund the government is not “clean.”

The Democrats have repeatedly denied that the Republicans passed a “clean CR,” which is a temporary spending bill to fund the government at existing spending levels. During an appearance on “Inside Politics,” Pelosi did not specify how the legislation does not fit the definition of being a “clean CR.”

“First of all, it isn’t a clean CR,” Pelosi said, prompting CNN host Dana Bash to ask how it is not clean. “It’s not a clean CR, there’s no reason to go into that. The point is Democrats who created Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, all of that are now being asked ‘reject that so we can give a tax cut to the rich.’ We’re not doing it. And it isn’t a question of well let’s come back together so we can discuss it. That isn’t going to happen. They had that chance. Now they just have to open government with it as a stipulation.”

WATCH:

Contrary to Democrats’ claims, The Committee for a Responsible Budget, a non-partisan organization, stated that the resolution was “as clean of a C.R. as you could get,” according to The New York Times. The Democrats said they voted against the CR over its failure to extend Biden-era subsidies in the Affordable Care Act in exchange for their support, which has caused an ongoing shutdown.

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) previously estimated that such a permanent extension of the tax credit would expand the deficit by $350 billion between 2026 and 2035.

Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman, Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada and independent Maine Sen. Angus King, who caucuses with Democrats, were the only ones to vote in favor of keeping the government open. Fetterman said he voted for “our country over [his] party” and that the shutdown was a “sad day for our nation.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer supported the exact same CR in March and stated on the Senate floor that he refused to shut down the government. Vice President J.D. Vance said that Schumer is caving to the far-left wing of his party because he is afraid that Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will challenge him in the upcoming primary. Ocasio-Cortez refused to tell MSNBC’s Chris Hayes whether she threatened to primary challenge Schumer if he supported the CR.
