Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed Wednesday that the Israeli military killed Hamas leader Muhammad Sinwar on May 13.

Sinwar, who assumed leadership of the Palestinian terror outfit after Israel eliminated his brother Yahya Sinwar, was killed via airstrike, Israeli authorities confirmed two weeks after the bombing, according to The Jerusalem Post. The airstrike that killed Sinwar targeted a tunnel network underneath a hospital in the Gaza Strip.

Israeli officials have characterized Muhammad Sinwar as one of the main obstacles to releasing hostages and achieving a ceasefire agreement.

Israel has methodically targeted Hamas leadership since the militants committed the Oct. 7, 2023, massacres, in which terrorists killed approximately 1,200 people and took 251 hostages.

As of May 12, Hamas still holds 58 hostages, dead or alive, according to the American Jewish Committee. In January, 33 hostages were released as part of a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas that ran until March, and the last American hostage — 21-year-old Edan Alexander — was set free on May 12.

The IDF has successfully eliminated numerous other Hamas leaders since the start of the war, including top commanders Muhammad Deif in July 2024 and Ahmed Siam in 2023. Additionally, the IDF successfully killed Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah with a massive airstrike in September 2024.

Despite Sinwar’s demise, the war in the Gaza Strip does not presently appear likely to wind down in the immediate future.

Israel launched “Operation Gideon’s Chariots” on May 17, with Netanyahu aiming to achieve a total occupation of the Gaza Strip. Hamas has been struggling to halt Israel’s rapid advance into the Gaza Strip, with some reports suggesting that the terrorist group is running out of money to pay its fighters.

Amid Israel’s push for complete control over Gaza, some Western leaders have criticized Netanyahu for alleged abuses in the conflict and instructed him to halt his incursion into the Gaza Strip.

“I say to President Macron, Prime Minister Carney and Prime Minister Starmer: When mass murderers, rapists, baby killers and kidnappers thank you, you’re on the wrong side of justice,” Netanyahu said May 23 in response to the leaders’ comments. “You’re on the wrong side of humanity and you’re on the wrong side of history.”
