In a bizarre case that sounds more like a soap opera than a police report, a North Carolina man is accused of being married to three different women in three separate counties — simultaneously.

Harry Burdick Jr. now faces two counts of felony bigamy, according to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, which announced his arrest following an investigation that began back in April, according to Law&Crime.

Online records show that Burdick obtained a marriage license in Davidson County in January 2023. But investigators say he didn’t stop there.

Burdick also tied the knot in Guilford County and Lincoln County, flanking Davidson County to the east and west. Authorities could find no evidence of divorce proceedings in any of the three cases.

The sheriff’s office stated Burdick’s motivation appeared to be “financial motivation and personal gain.”

Investigators allege this wasn’t just a case of confusion or romantic missteps — it was a pattern. Burdick, who is reportedly either 60 or 61 years old, is accused of marrying one woman, benefiting financially, and then moving on to the next.

“I can’t imagine anybody even wanting to do that,” said neighbor Roger Walser in an interview with local ABC affiliate WSOC. “It just don’t make sense. To me it don’t. One woman is all any man needs.”

And the story may not end with three. Law enforcement officials say there may be more victims, with a fourth woman reportedly claiming she was romantically involved with Burdick, too.

Burdick was arrested on August 22, but was released on a written promise to appear in court, according to the sheriff’s office. His first court appearance is set for September 22 at the Davidson County Courthouse.

Despite his current charges, court records show Burdick has been divorced before, most recently in January 2019 in Guilford County.

Under North Carolina law, bigamy is a felony that carries a potential prison sentence of 3 to 12 months.

With counties like Davidson, Guilford, and Lincoln all located in central North Carolina, Burdick’s alleged scheme didn’t require much travel — but the fallout could span far wider, especially if more women come forward.
