NYC Fire Commissioner Resigns Following Zohran Mamdani’s Election as Mayor

Firefighters stand outside the scene of an apartment building fire as they listen to New York City Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro speak to reporters in the Bronx, New York on January 10, 2022. New York City officials on January 10 revised down from 19 to 17 the death toll from a fire that broke out in a high-rise apartment in the Bronx a day earlier. Mayor Eric Adams told reporters it was now known that nine adults and eight children had been killed in the January 9 blaze, one of America's worst residential infernos in recent memory. New York City Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker announced Wednesday that he will step down from his post next month, just one day after Zohran Mamdani was elected as the city’s next mayor.

According to Fox News, Tucker said he will remain on the job until Dec. 19 to ensure “an orderly transition.” Mamdani is scheduled to take office on Jan. 1, 2026.

“It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as the 35th New York City Fire Commissioner,” Tucker said in a statement. “Thank you to Mayor Adams for his trust and confidence in doing this job. We empowered the brave men and women who keep our city safe, bringing fire-related deaths to a historic low.”

Mayor Eric Adams praised Tucker’s leadership and dedication in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“Commissioner Robert Tucker has led the Fire Department of the City of New York with courage, passion, and a sincere dedication to public safety,” Adams said. “When I appointed Commissioner Tucker to this critical role, I knew he’d have the experience, grit, and zeal to protect our city and support our fearless heroes – the firefighters, emergency medical technicians, and paramedics who put their lives on the line for New York every day.”

“We are incredibly grateful for Commissioner Tucker’s service and look forward to seeing what he’ll do next,” Adams added.
Tucker, who grew up in Manhattan, attended George Washington University and later earned his law degree from Pace University School of Law, according to his online biography.
