In a jaw-dropping case of vacation priorities gone wrong, a 10-year-old boy was reportedly abandoned at a Spanish airport after his parents boarded their flight without him — because he didn’t have the proper travel documents, according to the New York Post.
The incident, which has yet to be officially verified by authorities, was described in detail by Lilian, a self-identified air-operations coordinator, who shared the story on TikTok with her 320,000 followers.
“[The kid] told [police] that his parents were on the plane, on their way to their home country for vacation,” Lilian said. The boy was allegedly left in the terminal with the hope that a relative would come retrieve him.
According to Lilian, the situation unraveled when the child attempted to board the plane but was stopped due to documentation issues. “The explanation given to [the authorities] was that the child was traveling with an expired passport from Spain, and needed a travel visa,” she said in Spanish. “Since he didn’t have a visa, they left the kid in the terminal and called a relative to pick him up.”
Her reaction? Total disbelief. “I didn’t see it as normal,” she said. “The police didn’t see it as normal either.”
Sure, airlines do allow children to fly alone — but abandoning a minor in a busy terminal because of bureaucratic hurdles isn’t exactly in the parent handbook. And while travel mix-ups happen — like the German couple who forgot their five-year-old daughter at Stuttgart Airport in 2018, or the two-year-old who got caught in a luggage conveyor at Newark Airport this past May — this latest case is drawing viral heat for all the wrong reasons.
Lilian, herself a mother and air traffic controller, was appalled. “Hallucinating?” she said about the parents’ state of mind. “I’ve seen a lot of things, but this has been completely surreal.”
She didn’t hold back in her criticism, accusing the parents of putting their child at risk for the sake of convenience. “They call a relative, who might take half an hour, an hour or three hours, and they calmly board the flight and leave the child behind,” she said. “As a mother, I’d freak out.”
According to Lilian, police were notified immediately, removed the parents’ luggage from the aircraft, and brought the couple to the airport police station for questioning.
As of now, it remains unclear whether the parents were arrested or what legal consequences — if any — they may face. But the internet is already reaching its own verdict.
One thing is certain: this is one boarding call no parent should ever answer without their child.
