Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has made it official — she announced her retirement from Congress Thursday morning.
Pelosi, 85, was the first female Speaker in the history of the U.S., per The Hill.
She announced her retirement with a video on social media labeled “Thank you, San Francisco.”
“There has been on greater honor for me than to stand on the House floor and say I speak for the people of San Francisco,” she said after speaking of her love for the city she represented.
“I will not be seeking reelection to Congress. With a grateful heart I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative,” she continued. “As we go forward my message to the city I love is this. San Francisco, know your power. We have made history, we have made progress, we have always led the way. And now we must continue to do so by remaining full participants in our democracy and fighting for the American ideals we hold dear.”
Watch:
The representative stepped down from her Speaker role, but remained in Congress — something former Speakers do not necessarily do.
This led the way for younger Democrats to forge their way to leadership roles.
One example of this is Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), who is now the minority leader of the House.
Pelosi was instrumental in convincing then-President Joe Biden to stop his reelection campaign off after a disastrous debate against the Republican candidates — Donald Trump — who eventually won the election over Biden’s replacement, then-Vice President Kamala Harris.
Just recently, Pelosi referred to Trump as ” .. just a vile creature, the worst thing on the face of the earth,” IJR previously reported.
She was also instrumental in getting Proposition 50 passed on Tuesday in California.
