For the most part, former Vice President Mike Pence has stayed out of the political fray since leaving office in 2020.
That all changed Friday when Pence issued a statement condemning President-elect Donald Trump picking Robert F Kennedy Jr. to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, per Mediaite.
In fact, he is urging Senate Republicans to vote against Kennedy’s nomination, pointing to the nominee’s pro-abortion stance.
“For the majority of his career, RFK Jr. has defended abortion on demand during all nine months of pregnancy, supports overturning the Dobbs decision and has called for legislation to codify Roe v Wade,” Pence said. “If confirmed, RFK, Jr. would be the most pro-abortion Republican appointed secretary of HHS in modern history.”
“On behalf of tens of millions of pro-life Americans, I respectfully urge Senate Republicans to reject this nomination and give the American people a leader who will respect the sanctity of life as secretary of Health and Human Services,” Pence added.
Trump announced his pick for Kennedy to lead the health-oriented department Thursday night.
Kennedy is viewed as a controversial nominee given his years of conspiracy theories regarding vaccines as well as his promise to raze the National Institutes of Health.
Until Kennedy’s nomination, Pence had said he was “very encouraged” by the other cabinet appointments.
