The Department of Defense (DoD) is asking for a large-scale funding increase for domestic and international defense systems, according to a new estimate from the agency.

The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) fiscal year 2026 budget request shows a 27% increase over the 2025 enacted budget, comprised of a guaranteed $10.2 billion and a supplemental $3 billion package that has yet to be passed by Congress, the agency’s estimate says. The request follows a targeted ballistic missile attack by Iran against the Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

The full package would include “$10.5 billion in research, development, test and evaluation funding, $1.6 billion in procurement, $720.4 million in operations and maintenance and $306.4 million for military construction,” according to a DefenseNews analysis.

The MDA requested a hefty $3.2 billion for the Ground Based Midcourse Defense system, which is designed to protect the homeland from intercontinental ballistic missiles originating from Iran and North Korea. Additional funding will also go to Guam, a critically significant hotspot in the Indo-Pacific theatre where air-and-missile defense systems protect the United States from threats from China and North Korea.

Per a previous agreement that ends in 2028, the MDA will also spend an undisclosed amount on Israeli defense systems including the Iron Dome and the Arrow Weapon System, the estimate states. This supplements an additional $1 billion in funding appropriated in the Israel Security Supplemental Appropriation Act in 2024 for systems associated with the Iron Dome.

Another significant expenditure includes a 105% increase in the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense Program spending, rising from $74,208 thousand in fiscal year 2025 to $152,247 in fiscal year 2026, the estimate states. The request also procures around 37 Terminal High Altitude Area Defense System interceptors, according to DefenseNews.

A separate $25 billion funding request for President Donald Trump’s golden dome has been made to Congress as part of a $113 billion spending bill now under debate, DefenseNews reported. The total price tag of the Golden Dome is estimated at $175 billion, with the president stating the system will be completed before the end of his term.

“I’m pleased to announce that we have officially selected an architecture for this state-of-the-art system that will deploy next-generation technologies across the land, sea and space, including space-based sensors and interceptors,” President Trump said in an Oval Office meeting regarding the project in May. “Once fully constructed, the Golden Dome will be capable of intercepting missiles even if they are launched from other sides of the world, and even if they’re launched from space. And we will have the best system ever built.”

The Golden Dome is President Trump’s proposed state-of-the-art homeland defense architecture designed to intercept missiles, including those from space and peer states like Russia and China, using next-generation technologies across land, sea, and space.

“[O]fficial United States homeland missile defense policy has remained only to stay ahead of rogue-nation threats and accidental or unauthorized missile launches,” Trump’s “Iron Dome For America” executive order states.

“It’s amazing how easy this one is to fund,” Trump said in the Oval Office meeting. “Some funding is tough and some is easy. When we say we’re going to save everyone’s lives in a crazy world, it seems to be very easy to get.”
