Dr. Anthony Fauci was among those celebrated and in their honor to him, the magazine wrote that the infectious disease expert was out front despite him and his family receiving death threats.
The People list was not the only honor that Fauci received this week. Elton John honored the physician at World AIDS Day and he was given a Lifetime Achievement Award from the US Global Leadership Coalition. In his remarks the legendary singer said, “What a wonderful and fitting way to mark World AIDS Day, by honoring one of the biggest champions in the history of the AIDS epidemic.”
George Clooney was honored for his work with his organization: Clooney Foundation for Justice. The editors also noted that the movie star donated $1 million to coronavirus relief efforts and half a million dollars to the Equal Justice Initiative after the killing of George Floyd.
Regina King racked up a number of awards in 2019 for her acting roles but People honored her for her work combatting police violence and encouraging voting.
Selena Gomez was honored for working to amplify the voices of underprivileged communities. She also launched a makeup company that has the lofty goal of raising $100 million to help deliver mental health services.
This is the second year that People has published their list. The 2019 list included Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lopez, Michelle Obama and Taylor Swift.
