A 33-year-old Southern California mother was found dead Saturday after her husband blamed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for her disappearance before fleeing to Peru.

The Montrose Search and Rescue Team found the remains of 33-year-old Sheylla Cabrera at the bottom of an embankment in the Angeles National Forest, according to a press release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Concerns for Cabrera’s whereabouts first arose on Aug. 12, when a missing person report was filed at the Lancaster Station, officials said.

During a follow-up investigation on Aug. 13, Lancaster Station investigators “discovered additional video surveillance of the missing person’s husband dragging a large object in a large piece of material from the apartment complex” where Cabrera, her three young sons, and her husband lived.

Surveillance footage shared with ABC7 by a neighbor showed Cabrera’s husband, 36-year-old Jossimar Cabrera, appearing to drag something large wrapped in fabric.

While family members were worried about the mother’s whereabouts, Jossimar Cabrera told Cabrera’s sister that ICE had taken her, according to ABC7. He later claimed she left with another man before finally saying she had suffered an accident, the outlet reported.

A day after the missing person report was filed, Jossimar Cabrera became a person of interest in the case, but officials said he had already fled to Peru with his three sons. Working with the Mexican and Peruvian consulates, authorities located the children, who were taken into protective custody in Peru on Saturday.

Notably, the children were taken into custody by the Peruvian Ministry at the Lima airport; however, Jossimar Cabrera was not detained after questioning, according to The Los Angeles Times. In response to not arresting Jossimar Cabrera, the Peruvian consulate said that their authorities had been unable to detain him as no arrest warrant had been placed, according to Univision 34.

Cabrera’s mother, Helga Rocillo, told Latina Noticias that the 33-year-old mother had been intending to file a criminal report against Jossimar Cabrera over alleged psychological and physical abuse, The Los Angeles Times reported.

“She told me that Jossimar Cabrera Cornejo hit her, mistreated her, and even slapped my youngest grandchild, who is 3 years old,” Rocillo told the Latina Noticias.

With no official charges against Jossimar Cabrera being brought yet, the case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for their consideration of filing murder charges against the 36-year-old and obtaining the necessary documents to secure his return to the United States, officials said.

ICE did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
