A new poll finds that a majority of Republicans believe that former President Donald Trump is the “true president.”
A new Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Monday asked respondents to answer the question, “Who do you think the true President is right now?”
Fifty-three percent of Republicans said Trump is, while 47% said President Joe Biden is the “true president.” Meanwhile, three percent of Democrats said Trump is the “true president,” and 97% said Biden is.
While Trump has repeatedly made unfounded claims that the election was stolen, there has been no evidence to corroborate his claims that widespread fraud tilted the results of the election in Biden’s favor.
Despite a lack of evidence to back up Trump’s claim, the poll found that a quarter of all respondents said they believed the 2020 election was “the result of illegal voting or election rigging.”
That number broke down largely along party lines with 86% of Democrats saying the results are accurate, and just 25% of Republicans saying the same. Additionally, 53% of independents said they believe the results were accurate.
Fifty-four percent of Republicans said they believe far-left protesters were behind the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to make Trump look bad.
On Jan. 6, hundreds of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol. There is not evidence to support the claim that far-left protesters were behind the riot.
