Pollster Matt Towery said Thursday evening on “Hannity” that he believes President Donald Trump’s poll numbers are likely higher than reported due to the Democratic Party “plummeting” in the polls.
A new CNN poll conducted by SSRS, released Sunday, showed the Democratic Party’s favorability dropping to 29%, a record low after losing 20 points since January 2021. While discussing the party’s struggles and lack of leadership, Hannity asked Towery if he believed the Democrats’ push for progressive policies and social justice activism reflects what the “party wants to be.”
“Most of these polls we’ve seen are the ones that didn’t get Trump right in the election anyway, so they’re off to begin with,” Towery said.
“Secondly, they keep talking about the Democratic Party, but what most people don’t point out is the number of people who now identify themselves as Democrats is shrinking and shrinking rapidly,” Towery added. “So you’ve got a smaller party that doesn’t appear to have a plan, that isn’t polling well at all.”
In the CNN/SSRS poll conducted from March 6-9, disapproval of the Democratic Party notably came from within, with only 63% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents approving of their party. This marks a nine-point drop since January and an 18-point decline since the start of the Biden-Harris administration.
On Feb. 9, Trump reached his highest approval rating of both terms at 53%, according to a CBS News poll. However, following the new high, his approval reportedly dipped due to economic concerns. An Emerson College Polling survey found Trump at 47% approval just 50 days into office, with 45% disapproving.
“Now, one irony I have, I found ironic, Sean, is that you had these polls come out and they said, ‘Well, President Trump was, his advantage or his performance advantage was a little bit below his performance normally,’” Towery said. “Well, I don’t believe that’s true, because if you’re going to say that the Democrats are nowhere, they’re plummeting, that means that Trump has to be doing well.”
“You can’t have everybody doing bad at the same time,” Towery said. “I think the president’s numbers are higher, his performance in office, I think they’re higher than the polls are showing right now, and I think the Democrats are really looking like they have no plan whatsoever, and that’s coming across to the voters and people who respond to our polls.”
Democrats have struggled since Trump’s November win to present a unified message or leader to voters. With the Senate recently approving the House’s GOP-led spending bill — due to 10 Democrats joining Republicans — calls for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to step aside have grown within the party.
Notably, in the CNN/SSRS poll, over 30% of respondents did not name a lawmaker they believed “best reflects the core values” of the Democratic Party. Among those who did, 10% chose New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 9% picked former Vice President Kamala Harris, 8% named Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, and 6% selected House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
