About Zaire

Zaire, oficialmente a Democratic Republic of the Congo de 1965 a 1971 e a Republic of Zaire de 1971 a 1997, foi o estado congolês na África Central chefiado por Mobutu Sese Seko de 1965 a 1997. Era, por área, o terceiro maior país da África depois de Sudan e Algeria, e o 11º maior país do mundo de 1965 a 1991. Com uma população de mais de 23 milhões, Zaire era o país francófono mais populoso da África. Zaire era estrategicamente importante para o Ocidente durante a Guerra Fria, particularmente para os U.S., como contrapeso à influência soviética na África.
