Democratic Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy reportedly cozied up to Courier Newsroom CEO Tara McGowan at a restaurant in Washington, D.C. recently after he separated from his wife.

Murphy reportedly was seen “cuddling” and “being cutesy” with 39-year-old McGowan, a Democrat operative who previously worked at Obama for America and served as press secretary to Democratic Rhode Island Sen. Jack Reed, according to a New York Post report. McGowan reportedly posted a selfie of her and Murphy on Instagram with the caption, “not postponing joy,” according to Semafor.

The outing reportedly took place at the Red Hen the night before President Donald Trump’s congressional address, according to the Post. Murphy is reportedly still legally married to his wife, Cathy Holahan, though they separated in November.

Courier Newsroom is a George Soros-backed news initiative that operates 11 newsrooms in political battleground states. It has received millions of dollars from major left-wing donors, including a $2.2 million donation by Soros’ nonprofit, Fund for Policy Reform Inc., and a $250,000 Planned Parenthood donation between June 2021 and June 2022.

The company is backed by McGowan’s nonprofit, ACRONYM, and has since been acquired by her public benefit corporation, Good Information Inc.

McGowan has personally promoted Murphy on her X account, which has since been deactivated, by praising his “pro-democracy” stances and retweeting his media appearances, according to the Post. She announced in Nov. 2023 that her organization would post video opinion pieces “from prominent pro-democracy leaders,” and pointed to a video of Murphy calling to ban so-called assault weapons.

“Beyond original newsletters, podcasts + social video series, COURIER’s new national vertical will publish video opinion pieces from prominent pro-democracy leaders fighting for our rights and freedoms, like this call from U.S. Senator @ChrisMurphyCT to ban assault weapons in [America],” she wrote on X, according to the Post.

The Courier Newsroom publisher repeatedly reposted Murphy’s posts on her X account, the Post reported.

Murphy has become a leading voice for Democrats as they attempt to counter Trump, sounding the alarm that the Democratic Party’s “political brand is fundamentally broken” while they still are unsure about the president’s “actual agenda,” according to a profile of the senator by The New York Times. The Connecticut senator recently warned that the U.S. is in an alleged “constitutional crisis,” a newly popular talking point used by some Democrats in an attempt to paint Trump as dictatorial.

“I think this is the most serious constitutional crisis the country has faced, certainly since Watergate,” Murphy said. “The President is attempting to seize control of power, and for corrupt purposes.”

Murphy’s office and McGowan did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
