CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten said on Tuesday that Republicans are still proud of being American, while Democrats’ pride is at an all-time low.

Democrats’ pride in their American identity dropped from 83% in 2013 to 31% in late 2025, Enten said while citing a PPRI survey. A majority of Republicans, 80%, were still “extremely or very proud” to be American as of late 2025, a 12-point drop from 2013.

“Just 31% of Democrats say they are extremely, are very proud to be an American,” Enten said. “That is the lowest, the lowest number on record. When you combine both youth and being a Democrat, that number falls into the 20s, falls into the 20 young Democrats, Generation Z Democrats, less than 30% of them are either extremely or very proud to be an American. So what we’re seeing here is both age, as well as partisanship playing a major role in the fact that pride and the proudness to be an American either extremely or very proud is at record lows.”

Enten then noted that Republicans’ pride in the U.S. had remained steady from the time of former President Barack Obama until the present day.  The numbers show that more Republicans were proud to be American during Obama’s second term than Democrats.

“Republicans’ pride to be an American extremely or very proud. In 2013, it was 92%,” Enten said. “By late 2025, pretty close, right? 80% maybe a slight fall in this PRI survey, but I went on the Gallup poll, which measures over a similar period. There was no change. There was no change. So what we’re seeing is we see younger people and Democrats really shifting away, shifting downward in their proudness to be an American, while Republicans have stayed pretty steady despite the partisanship of the president changing.”

Other polls have shown similar trends, including a Gallup poll from June, which found that just 36% of Democrats are more than “moderately proud” to be American. Their current level of national pride was at its lowest since 2020, when it was 42%, but it later remained above 50% throughout former President Joe Biden’s term.

The Gallup poll also found that patriotism among Republicans did not correlate with the president’s politics.

Democrats and left-leaning voters have expressed outrage and rioted over Trump’s immigration policies and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which led to widespread unrest in Minnesota throughout January after the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Some Democratic members of the House, including Texas Rep. Al Green, have repeatedly attempted to impeach Trump since he reentered office.
