Robert F. Kennedy Jr. put an end to speculation surrounding his run for the White House Friday as he ended his campaign and endorsed Republican candidate Donald Trump.
Kennedy, who was running as an independent, made the announcement in Phoenix, NBC News reported.
However, it seemed as though Kennedy trumped himself with a court filing in Pennsylvania earlier Friday when the endorsement was first confirmed before he made his announcement.
“Many months ago I promised the American people I would withdraw from the race if I became a spoiler. … In my heart, I no longer believe I have a realistic path to electoral victory,” said Kennedy, known for his workas an environmental lawyer.
Kennedy took aim at the Democratic Party, the party of his famous family.
He said the party was “abandon[ing] democracy.” He also blamed the Democratic Party and the media for conspiring against his campaign, which never gained momentum.
He then referred to Trump and himself as being victimized of by “continual legal warfare” at the hands of Democrats.
Kennedy also took aim at Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, because she did not garner “a single delegate” during her 2020 run as well as avoiding the press.
Kennedy reiterated that he and Trump are now political allies as well as victims.
“These are the principled causes that persuaded me to leave the Democratic Party and run as an independent, and now to throw my support to President Trump. The causes were: Free speech, the war in Ukraine, and the war on our children,” he said.
“One of the two candidates has adopted these issues as his own to the point where he has asked to enlist me in his administration. I’m speaking, of course, of Donald Trump.”
