Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) raised eyebrows late Sunday night when he suggested he might file a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) over how President Donald Trump’s recent “60 Minutes” interview with journalist Norah O’Donnell was edited.

As reported by the Daily Wire, Schumer took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and claimed the interview had been edited in a way that was unfair to the president.

Referencing a previous lawsuit filed by then-candidate Donald Trump in 2024, Schumer suggested that he could simply reuse the same complaint that Trump filed over an interview of former Vice President Kamala Harris, which aired just days before the 2024 presidential election. At the time, the Trump campaign had argued that the Harris interview was edited to make her appear more coherent and capable to voters.

“Maybe I should file a complaint with the FCC against the Trump White House for editing his unhinged 60 Minutes interview. It will use the exact same language Trump lodged against Vice President Harris,” Schumer posted.

The response from President Trump’s communication team came quickly and forcefully. A statement posted on social media argued that the situations were completely different. According to them, Harris’ interview had allegedly been edited in a misleading way to protect her political image during the election cycle, while Trump’s interview had only been edited for time — something common in broadcast journalism.

“They deceptively edited Kamala’s answers to make her look somewhat coherent ahead of an election, you moron — then wouldn’t release the transcript/unedited interview. That’s not the same as editing for time constraints (AND the transcript/unedited interview were both released),” the statement read.

Supporters of the Trump administration pointed out that the full, unedited version of Trump’s interview, along with a transcript, was released the same day the interview aired. That differed from the 2024 Harris interview, which critics claim was edited more aggressively and had its full version withheld for several days after public outcry.

Should Schumer file a complaint with the FCC over Trump's 60 Minutes interview editing?

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr also weighed in, turning the conversation toward the ongoing partial government shutdown, which began earlier in the month. In a post that appeared to mock Schumer, Carr said the FCC couldn’t process any such complaint while the federal government remained shut down — a shutdown some Republicans have referred to as the “Schumer Shutdown.”

“Due to the Schumer Shutdown, even your frivolous filing could not be processed by the FCC. But seriously, you should end the Schumer Shutdown — which is imposing real pain on American families — rather than nonsense posting,” Carr wrote. “You should open the government, rather than using Americans’ pain to pander to your far left flank.”

Other lawmakers joined the criticism. Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA) commented on Schumer’s late-night post, saying, “Maybe you should stop posting nonsense at 1:19AM in the morning and open the government.” Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) added, “Why don’t you open the Government, quit trying to starve poor folks and help us fix the broken healthcare system you helped create.”

At the time of this report, no official complaint had been filed with the FCC by Senator Schumer. It remains unclear whether he plans to follow through on the suggestion or if the post was primarily meant to make a political point. Meanwhile, the FCC remains limited in its operations due to the ongoing government funding impasse.
