CNN senior political commentator Scott Jennings questioned Tuesday why the public has learned detailed information about the alleged murderer of the UnitedHealthcare CEO while they still lack knowledge on the would-be assassins of President-elect Donald Trump and the 2023 school shooter in Nashville, Tennessee.

Luigi Mangione, the suspected murderer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, wrote a three-paged manifesto where he lamented how Thompson’s company and other healthcare corporations allegedly “abuse” the U.S. to gather up “immense profit,” according to a published copy of the note. Jennings questioned why detailed information regarding the attempted assassins of Trump or Audrey Hale, who murdered six at a Christian school in Nashville, have been hidden from the public long after the incidents.

“Do you think they should’ve released [Mangione’s] manifesto?” Jennings asked former Fox News host Geraldo Rivera. “Because some of the other shootings we’ve had in this country and other places, we still don’t know anything about the person who shot at Trump, we still don’t know much about the person who committed that atrocity at the Christian school in Nashville. There’s a lot of shootings … there’s a lot of things that are hidden from us, and this guy, Geraldo, shoots and we know more in 5 minutes about him than we do about all these other people, and I wonder why that is.”

CNN contributor Cari Champion said Mangione’s story has “hit home for a lot of people” since many Americans are fed up with the healthcare system. Former CNN host and congressional candidate John Avlon argued Americans’ anger with healthcare corporations is not connected to Thompson’s murder.

The public has learned several things about Mangione in a short period of time, including that he was born into a wealthy family and graduated from the Gilman School, a prestigious all-boys institution, in 2016, according to CNN. He later graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League school, in 2020 with a degree in computer science and minor mathematics.

Friends and acquaintances of Mangione said he suffers from severe back pain and underwent surgery to help treat it, CNN reported. The suspected murderer also allegedly disdains the healthcare system due to its treatment of his grandfather.

Hale, a biological woman identifying as transgender, killed six people after she opened fire at Covenant School on March 27, 2023. Authorities verified that they quickly uncovered her manifesto appearing to plan the attack, but it was not fully released to the public until over one year later on Sept. 3.

Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old would-be assassin of Trump, killed former fire chief Corey Comperatore and injured the president-elect’s ear after firing eight rounds into the crowd from a nearby rooftop during a July 13 rally. Another would-be assassin, Ryan Routh, attempted to shoot Trump at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, with an AK-47-style rifle.

Few details are known about both of the would-be assassins several months following their attempts on Trump’s life.
