Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., said Saturday that his political decisions are guided more by what he sees as “moral clarity” than by party loyalty, even as his positions continue to put distance between him and other Democrats.
Speaking on “Life, Liberty & Levin,” Fetterman pointed to his strong support for Israel as the main source of tension. He acknowledged that his stance has created a noticeable divide within his party, especially as debates over the Middle East have intensified.
“There’s been a fracturing between me and my party… primarily it’s been Israel,” he said, noting that he was one of the few Democrats to back Operation Epic Fury, the joint U.S.-Israeli military campaign targeting Iran. He framed that support as a matter of principle rather than politics.
Fetterman said he hasn’t second-guessed that position, even if it has cost him support within parts of the Democratic base. “That might isolate me politically, but I’ve had no regrets,” he said, adding that he doesn’t weigh political calculations when he believes the issue is clear-cut.
He also took aim at some Democrats who have aligned themselves with Hasan Piker, a far-left online personality known for controversial commentary. Fetterman questioned why members of his party would associate with someone who has made inflammatory remarks in the past.
Piker has faced backlash for several statements over the years, including a 2019 comment in which he said “America deserved 9/11,” a remark he later acknowledged was inappropriate. He has also drawn criticism for comments about Israel, religion, and the October 7 Hamas attacks.
Fetterman framed the issue as a broader question for Democrats. “Whose side are you on?” he asked, arguing that the party should be clear about its support for Israel rather than appearing aligned with voices he views as extreme. He added that while he may have lost support from more progressive or anti-Israel factions, he sees that segment as a growing influence within the party.
Beyond foreign policy, Fetterman also broke with fellow Democrats over the ongoing government shutdown. He criticized the strategy behind it, arguing that it harms federal workers without achieving its intended goals.
He said Democrats have traditionally opposed shutdowns because of the damage they cause, particularly to government employees. In his view, that principle has been lost in the current standoff.
Fetterman specifically pointed to Transportation Security Administration workers, noting they have continued working without pay for more than 40 days. He argued that those are the kinds of workers lawmakers should be protecting, not putting in a difficult position.
He also questioned the effectiveness of the shutdown in forcing policy changes, particularly around immigration enforcement. According to Fetterman, Democrats knew the shutdown would not directly affect Immigration and Customs Enforcement, making the strategy misguided.
