Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) is sounding the alarm after findings published by author and Breitbart News social media director Wynton Hall claim that Google’s Gemini AI chatbot is exhibiting clear political bias—specifically targeting conservatives while giving Democrats a pass.

The claims stem from Hall’s new book Code Red: The Left, the Right, China, and the Race to Control AI, which argues that so-called “neutral” AI systems are anything but impartial. In one test highlighted in the book, Hall used Gemini Pro’s “deep research” mode to evaluate all 100 U.S. senators based on the platform’s own hate speech policies.

The result raised eyebrows immediately.

According to Hall, the AI produced a list exclusively made up of Republican lawmakers it claimed had violated hate speech standards—without naming a single Democrat. Among those flagged was Cotton himself, with Gemini citing his criticism of “gay rights” priorities and his support for legislation restricting transgender athletes in women’s sports.

Cotton didn’t hold back in his response.

“The vast majority of Americans agree that girls’ sports should be for girls only—not men,” he said, calling the findings “deeply alarming.” He argued that labeling such widely held views as hate speech reveals a deeper ideological tilt within Silicon Valley’s most powerful technologies.

The controversy is amplified by broader public opinion. Polling from the Center Square indicates that a majority of Americans support restrictions on transgender athletes competing in girls’ and women’s sports—raising questions about whether AI systems are classifying mainstream viewpoints as violations.

Cotton wasn’t alone. The chatbot also flagged several high-profile Republicans, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Sens. Marsha Blackburn, Josh Hawley, and Rick Scott, among others. The pattern, critics say, reinforces long-standing concerns that Big Tech platforms disproportionately moderate or suppress conservative viewpoints.

Hall’s book frames the issue as part of a much larger battle over who controls the future of artificial intelligence. He warns that without intervention, the ideological leanings of Silicon Valley could shape not just online discourse, but the foundational systems that increasingly guide decision-making in society.

Supporters of the book, including Sen. Blackburn, have praised it as a critical wake-up call, arguing that the fight over AI is no longer theoretical—it’s already underway.

As AI tools become more embedded in everyday life, the stakes are rising fast. What began as a debate over bias in social media is now evolving into a broader confrontation over the algorithms that could define the next era of information, influence, and power.
