CNN’s John King suggested on Monday that Vice President Kamala Harris could be a prominent Democratic presidential contender in 2028, even after her resounding loss to President-elect Donald Trump in November.

Harris lost all seven battleground states, securing just 226 electoral votes compared to Trump’s 312, an outcome she certified on Monday, CNBC reported. King, during CNN’s coverage of the certification, warned against ruling Harris out of future presidential politics, arguing that Trump’s 2024 comeback was an even more improbable feat than a potential Harris resurgence.

“This is a fascinating moment for her. We’re only going to see her once or twice in big roles before she’s gone, right? Before the Trump team comes into Washington and she leaves. What next for Kamala Harris?” King said. “If you talk to people in this town … most Democrats say, ‘Oh, you know, go away, if you want to run for California governor, fine. Please don’t run for president again.’”

“I would remind you … On this day four years ago, everyone said Donald Trump was done, so discount her as a potential nominee four years from now or at least player in that at your peril,” he continued. “She just won 75 million votes. She just got 48.4% of the vote in the country. She just raised a billion dollars.”

Harris aides and allies are split on whether Harris should seek the governorship or aim for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028, with the decision depending on their evaluation of her odds at securing the nomination, CNN reported in December.

“She’s a black woman, popular with the foundational base of the Democratic Party, which is black women,” King added. “She has giant problems … She did not learn to speak to working class Americans about their cost of living and about their disaffection with this town. She’s viewed by many as a ‘coastal elite.’ She has a lot of problems.”

“Donald Trump had more when he left this town four years ago. The question I always have about politicians: Do they learn from their mistakes and their environment? She did not lose all because of her mistakes,” he continued. “She made some. She also had 100+ days to do something that normally people spend four, five, six, ten years preparing for.”

Political analyst Mark Halperin argued in December that Harris might have better odds at winning the California governor’s race than securing the Democratic presidential nomination again, but cautioned that both would be uphill battles.

“I think her chance[s] of being governor of California are greater than being the Democratic nominee, but I don’t think they’re as great as people say, because again, her challenge is her weakness,” Halperin said. “She does not like to make difficult choices under pressure, and that is the job description for running for governor of California, being governor of California, running for president, being president. So I think she might try, but I think she’d be surprised at how tough it is.”
