The children of the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) have differing views on the November election.
One has chosen to endorse Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, while the other will not support either Harris nor former President Donald Trump.
Either way, both are seemingly turning their backs on the Republican Party of which their father was a standard-bearer.
Meghan McCain announced on X, formerly Twitter, her decision to not endorse — or vote — for either presidential candidate, The Hill reported.
“I greatly respect the wide variety of political opinions of all of my family members and love them all very much,” Meghan McCain wrote Tuesday. “I, however, remain a proud member of the Republican Party and hope for brighter days ahead. (Not voting for Harris or Trump, hope that clears things up).”
Her comment follow the announcement her brother, Jimmy McCain, is supporting Harris, The Hill reported.
Jimmy McCain told CNN he changed his voter registration from independent to Democrat.
He added he “would get involved in any way I could” to help Harris get elected.
Jimmy McCain served in the military for 17 years and is an intelligence officer.
He spoke about the controversy surrounding Trump’s recent visit to Arlington National Cemetery. He called the Trump’s behavior a “violation.”
“It just blows me away,” he told CNN. “These men and women that are laying in the ground there have no choice” whether to be in a political ad or not.
“I just think that for anyone who’s done a lot of time in their uniform, they just understand that inherently — that it’s not about you there. It’s about these people who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the name of their country,” Jimmy McCain said.
Trump visited the cemetery last week to commemorate the third anniversary of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Trump said his appearance was a result of a family asked him to visit and to take pictures.
A confrontation reportedly took place when cemetery staff members tried to stop Trump’s team from photographing and filming an area of the cemetery dedicated to those who fought in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
The IJR reported Trump has denied an altercation ever took place.
Federal law prohibits political campaign or election-related activity in the cemetery.
Meanwhile, Meghan McCain did not say who she will support — if anyone — in November, per The Hill.
She rejected calls for her to endorse Harris by saying, “Please stop trying to turn me into a progressive.”
“It’s a fever dream,” she said. “I’m a life long, generational conservative.”
Trump had attacked John McCain many times — even stating John McCain was not a war hero because he was captured.
John McCain was a prisoner of war in Vietnam for more than five years.
He died in 2018.
