Conservatives criticized Mother Jones editor-in-chief Clara Jeffery on Tuesday for invoking Vice President J.D. Vance’s children to attack President Donald Trump’s mass deportation policy on social media.
Jeffery, on the social media platform BlueSky, said that Vance’s children experiencing getting booed at Disneyland was a lesson to them about their father, who she falsely stated is allowing the children of illegal immigrants to be sent to “gulags.” The Mother Jones editor received widespread backlash from many people online.
Donald Trump Jr. responded by writing, “WTF is wrong with these people,” in an X post, and Republican strategist Andrew Surabian called Jeffery a “soulless ghoul.”
“Imagine the type of soulless ghoul you have to be to say this…Imagine being the Editor in Chief of Mother Jones Magazine,” Surabian said.
Vance and his family encountered angered protesters who gathered outside of their hotel with signs that condemned the administration’s immigration policies, according to The Independent.
Jeffery also accused Vance of dragging his children to Disneyland for the “optics.”
“People who feel bad for JD Vance’s kids as family gets booed at Disneyland. I get it, but better those kids know now what their father is about,” Jeffery said. “Other kids are watching their parents get shipped off to gulags.”
“Also, JD Vance knows he’s going to be booed at Disneyland or the Kennedy Center or wherever. He doesn’t have to go with his kids, but…he probably wants the optics of his family being booed. So…yeah,” Jeffery continued.
Other BlueSky users laughed at and mocked the negative attention that Vance’s young children endured. In response to Jeffery, former Democrat Ohio congressional candidate Shannon Freshour said that Vance uses his kids “as human shields” while linking to a story about him being confronted by pro-Ukrainian protesters while he held his three-year-old daughter in March.
Michael Hobbes, a former reporter at the Huffington Post, said that the children should learn “sooner rather than later” that their father is a so-called “piece of sh*t.”
The vice president’s children, Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel, are eight, five and three years old.
In March, pro-Ukrainian protesters chased down and shouted at Vance while showing little concern that he held Mirabel in his arms. The vice president called out the pro-Ukrainian protesters for causing his young daughter to become “increasingly anxious and scared.”
