All is not lost in a possible peace plan between Ukraine and Russia.
On Sunday, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer talked about a peace plan that needs the support of the U.S. to be successful.
Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with French President Emmanuel Macron and other European leaders. Starmer said the European countries need to “step up their own share of the burden” regarding security guarantees for Ukraine should there be a peace deal, per Fox News.
Starmer said the U.K. is prepared to deploy troops to Ukraine to ensure Russia does not infringe on a peace agreement.
He said the plan would need U.S. backing as well.
Macron said European leaders were reviewing a plan that would halt strikes from the air, sea and on energy infrastructure for 30 days in Ukraine. That could be allow the parties to negotiate a wider peace deal.
Zelenskyy is still reeling from the disastrous meeting with President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance at the White House on Friday.
Zelenskyy said he is willing to sign a rare earth minerals deal with the White House. Secretary of State Marco Rubio ruled out “security guarantees” for Ukraine before beginning peace talks.
“The security guarantees, which I actually like to call deterrence, is all contingent upon there being a peace,” Rubio said on ABC “This Week.”“Everybody saying security guarantees to secure the peace, you first have to have a peace.”
Zelenskyy said after Sunday’s meetings the “best security guarantees are a strong Ukrainian army.”
