Bovino has drawn sharp criticism for his aggressive posture on immigration and for his public comments following the most recent shooting.

City leaders urged calm as details emerged.

Mayes, who was elected in 2022, made the remarks as immigration enforcement activity expands in Arizona. She also pledged to prosecute any ICE agent who violates state law.

He blamed the federal government for failing to enact immigration reform.

The incident unfolded as the agent attempted to conduct a traffic stop connected to the arrest effort.

The federal agent involved in the Jan. 7 shooting suffered internal bleeding after being struck by the woman’s vehicle. 

“All the patriots of ICE want to do is remove them from your neighborhood and send them back to the prisons and mental institutions from where they came …”
