Tuesday’s flight follows a series of higher-profile operations since late summer, including U.S. strikes on vessels accused of drug smuggling in both the Caribbean Sea and the eastern Pacific.

This reverses a Saturday statement from Venezuela indicating that U.S. immigration authorities had unilaterally suspended the flights.

Trump announced that Venezuela’s airspace would be considered “closed in its entirety.”

He urged Venezuelans to mobilize, describing the country as facing threats from abroad — a reference to what he called “imperialist aggression.” 

The agency did not specify the exact nature of the threats but made clear that pilots should be alert to heightened danger.

"In Venezuela's case, it's about drugs, and it's also about thousands, hundreds of thousands, of people that they've released into our country.”

While the legislation faces little chance of becoming law, it forced senators to take a public stance on Trump’s approach toward Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

"President Donald J. Trump announced today that the United States of America will be putting what is known as a Secondary Tariff on the Country of Venezuela."
